The Day The Earth Stood Still

Dir. Robert Wise, 92 min, USA, B&W, 1951, 16mm

A true Sci-Fi classic and one of the genre's most touching works. The Day the Earth Stood Still is, on the surface, the story of an alien visitor and his robot companion,  yet is quickly brought down to a human level as we see the way such an event reverberates through society. It's characters have influenced pop-culture from Freaks and Geeks to Daft Punk, and it's early electronic soundtrack is a marvel in composition by Bernard Herrmann. The film has been selected for preservation by the United States National Film Registry and has received recognition from the American Film Institute.  Sled Island will be screening the film in 16mm format.
