Sled Island is dedicated to being an environmentally responsible festival. We pride ourselves on working with attendees, artists and partners to implement initiatives that make our festival and our community responsible environmental stewards.
Recycling and Waste Reduction
Sled Island is continually improving our waste and recycling management as well as working to reduce waste at its source. We aim to make Sled Island a waste-free event that reuses, recycles or composts all waste. Everyone can be a part of our Green Island team: sort your waste, recycling and compostables into the right bins, carry a reusable water bottle and help our awesome volunteers keep the festival clean! Special thanks to our partner The City of Calgary for helping us lessen our environmental impact.
Riding bikes is fun and, without a doubt, the best way to get around Sled Island. A big thank you to our official bike sponsor, First Calgary Financial, who makes it possible for us to provide bike parking at many of your favourite venues.
Our friends at Prohab Helmet Society ride with us each year and work to keep your noggins safe by selling helmets at wallet-friendly prices. If you don’t have a helmet, or if you’re looking for a new one, check them out.
Finally, biking in Calgary is now easier and safer than ever. New cycle tracks are open on 5th St. SW (3rd Ave. SW to 17th Ave. SW), 12th Ave. (11th St. SW to 4th St. SE), 8th Ave. SW. (11th St. SW to Macleod Trail, excluding Stephen Ave.) and 9th Ave. SE (Macleod Trail to 4th St. SE). The tracks are part of a one-year pilot project and are segregated from vehicle traffic with barriers to keep you safe!
